I wasn't originally going to do this, but a wonderful young woman named Jess talked me into it. The basic idea is to list one movie for every year starting with your year of birth and going up through last year. The way I'm picking is through influence. The chosen film might not be the best of the year--it might not even be my favorite of the year (that would make an incredibly different list, actually); however, it's the film that, for whatever reason, influenced me the most and has molded me into the person I am today... for better or worse. There were some very difficult years. The hardest to narrow down, specifically, were 1990, 1994, 1997, 1999, 2002, and 2004. If I had trouble picking one, I basically went with a "which did I watch more?" path. But nevertheless, I have (painstakingly) gotten it down to one film a year. I won't give an explanation in the post, but if you're curious, you can always ask me in the comments section, and I'll be glad to share. So for your viewing pleasure, here's my life in film:
1986
1987
1988
1989
1990
1991
1992

Well, we have three crossovers.
ReplyDeleteHostage? Ok, I never saw it, but I've never gotten the impression that I was missing anything, either.
ReplyDeleteTell us...how influenced were you by Ernest Scared Stupid?
Love that The Cube made the cut!!!
ReplyDeleteHaha... I knew Ernest would be the one that got questioned. When I was little, I used to watch it all the time around Halloween (that and Hocus Pocus, which barely missed this list, as well). But there's one line in it that I still love to this day for some strange reason. They're trying to figure out how to kill the trolls, and there's a letter missing from the word. It looks like MI_K. It turns out to be milk, but Ernest somehow comes up with Miak. When he makes that announcement... and ends up finding Miak... I just think is funny. And the movie as a whole helped start a liking toward B-Horror/comedy (well, this and Howard the Duck, but that was before 86).
ReplyDeleteHostage: 1) Ben Foster. 2) heist gone wrong. 3) It really helped me while I was writing one of my books (this one along with Inside Man).
Joel: I love Cube!
Good call on Cube but this list is NUTSO, dude! I love it.
ReplyDeleteThink we only had a few overlaps (5 maybe).
Haven't seen Hostage, Pitch Black or The Cube. We'll have to remedy that. Good list.
ReplyDeleteJess: Not sure if Cube is your cup of tea, but you never know (I can't see you loving it, but you could--maybe--appreciate it?).
ReplyDeleteYou might enjoy Pitch Black, though it is a "killer aliens" movie, so there's an element of horror you might not like. Vin Diesel's Richard B. Riddick is one of my favorite movie characters.
There's a good chance you might like Hostage, though. It's a fun thriller.
Good to see Leon in there, one of my favorite movies. That reminds me I want to add it to my Netflix queue.
ReplyDeleteSome cool choices. I don't think they're necessarily the best films but they're a lot of fun ones. I especially like 28 Days Later. That film deserves recognition.

Castor: Yup. Leon was a top favorite of mine for a long time. And the full-length "Leon" version is much better than the cut "The Professional" version.
ReplyDeleteDan: Yeah, I say straight off that these aren't the best movies of the year and, in some cases, not even my favorite movies of the year. But rather, the films of the year that had the biggest impact on me personally growing up and today (depending on the year/film).
All I have to say is I love that you got Roger Rabbit and Repo on this list. I just rewatched Roger Rabbit for the first time since I was a wee one and that's some fucked up animated animals there. And Repo is just the shit. Love that movie.
ReplyDeleteI love Ernest Scared Stupid! haha
