EDIT: Totally forgot a movie I need to review. Added it to the top of the list.
Alright, so I'm not going to talk about the movies coming out this weekend and which ones I want to see, etc. To get that out of the way now, I want to see both Fast & Furious and Adventureland. But I'm going to see the former tomorrow, because not only do I think it's pretty awesome myself, but my sister wouldn't have taken no for an answer anyway.
So my pre-emptive strike here is to let everybody know what I've been up to lately and what you can expect within the coming month. I haven't posted very often lately, but that doesn't mean I haven't been watching movies. In fact, I've been watching quite a few, and I owe you guys tons of reviews. So on top of tomorrow's Fast & Furious review (which will probably be posted up either within the last hour of the day or the early hours of Saturday morning), you'll be getting numerous others... and possibly even a new round of the new quote game.
So what reviews can you be expecting soon? Well, at least in some form or fashion, you will be seeing the following movies/documentaries/TV shows reviewed by me, most likely within this month:
- 16 Blocks, the movie where Bruce Willis plays a down-and-out, nearly retired version of John McClane, and Mos Def makes one of the worst acting choices in history by trying to sound like a mentally handicapped, nasally Elmo.
- Daywatch, the sequel to Nightwatch (not the crappy Ewan McGregor movie, but the Russian mindfuck movie).
- How to Lose Friends & Alienate People... how much does my love of Simon Pegg extend?
- Funny Games, the US remake, not the original... though I hear there's not much of a difference. I'm not sure if that's a good thing.
- Special, an upliftingly depressing film about a loser who starts getting superpowers. But not really.
- Dragonball Z: Season One... with the movie coming to a theater near you in about a week, and coming to your computer about 2-3 weeks ago, along with a slew of 'worst movie ever made' reviews, I decided to give in to nostalgia and start rewatching the series I had once been addicted to many years ago.
- In the Mouth of Madness, the movie that shows us what would happen if Stephen King had the insane fanbase of JK Rowling (see: next), disappeared from existence, and then had John Carpenter make a movie about it.
- We Are Wizards, a documentary about the Harry Potter fandom and how you shouldn't fuck with them.
- This Film Is Not Yet Rated, a documentary about good filmmakers and how you shouldn't fuck with them.
- Death Note & Death Note II: The Last Name, two live action movies based on the amazing anime (and manga) series. But do they live up to the original(s)?
- Son of Rambow, a movie I watched and reviewed ages ago but have yet to post it up. At this rate, it'll get posted by the time they make a sequel to it with the same actors, but far past their prime.
- Sex Drive, a film I have yet to see, but will hopefully arrive via Netflix in a couple days.
- Confessions of a Superhero... see the status of 'Sex Drive', the plot of 'Special', and the quips in my notes on the aforementioned 'documentaries'.
And... that's about it. Like I said, I owe y'all a lot. I better get crackin', huh?

Title: Race to Witch Mountain.
Pre-Thoughts: I know of the original, probably even seen parts of it, but I don't think I've seen the whole thing. Regardless, I enjoy Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, and this movie actually looks kinda fun... though the trailer does pretty much give away the ending (on them getting to the mountain) for those who haven't seen the original. So who knows? I might be there.

Title: The Last House on the Left.
Pre-Thoughts: Another classic remake of which I have not seen the original (I know, shame on me being a horror fan and all). But at least it's not a remake of another brainless slasher flick. It's close, but at least this one has a story that kinda turns it all around on its head. Horror remakes almost always disappoint (Dawn of the Dead being one of the few exceptions in recent years). But I might check it out eventually, if simply because I like the premise.

Pre-Thoughts: Is it just me, or does anybody else feel like they've seen this movie before? It's like another Road Trip/EuroTrip, mixed in with The House Bunny, a bit of Just Friends, and a sprinkle of any number of the crappy "National Lampoon" movies to come out in recent years. I really have no strong feelings one way or the other about this movie... just that it looks tired and so-done-before.

Pre-Thoughts: Never heard of it before this point. It has a decent cast, though--Amy Adams, Emily Blunt, Alan Arkin, and Steve Zahn. It also has a bit of an interesting premise. Too bad that it's gotten zero publicity and is probably just under limited release.
Pre-Score: Can't score it.
Title: Brothers at War.
Pre-Thoughts: Never heard of it, either. An unknown cast. Another movie involving the Iraq War. And probably a limited release. In other words, I really don't care.

Title: Watchmen.
Pre-Thoughts: I read the graphic novel and enjoyed it. I know of the altered ending and don't really care (in respect to the climax). The only thing I'm not liking is that there are rumors that the final scene in the book is not in the movie, which is insane, because that's the scene that makes the entire story worth it. Not to mention it's one of the greatest endings ever. But everything else is supposed to be dead-on with the graphic novel (except for the Black Freighter stuff, which is going to be added in with a Director's Cut DVD). I'm pretty excited. Though the rating really depends on if they cut that final scene or not. Going on the assumption that they did (grumble grumble), I am prescoring it as such.

Pre-Thoughts: Going back to the Miley Cyrus/Hannah Montana event that did so freaking well at the box office last year, I've never understood putting not only a concert in theaters, but making a concert 3D. To top it all off with the concert being the Jonas Brothers? You'll find more teeny boppers there than at an Edward Cullen suck fest (take that however you like).

Title: Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li.
Pre-Thoughts: Remember how well the Van Damme version did? Well, lots of other people do, too. I don't know how this one will fair. It's interesting that they're having it focus on Chun-Li instead of the game's main protagonists Ken and Ryu, but I know there's some game storyline Street Fighter vs. Street Fighter II reasoning behind it. But I was never a big Street Fighter fan (nothing against it, just didn't play it), so I couldn't tell you. However, while the movie looks rather bad, it's actually including more of the superpowered stuff like hadokens, which I'd like to see on screen. And that's probably the same reason I'm gonna see Dragonball when it comes out this year, too. Though with my expectations so low, I might be in for a surprise. Hell, maybe that's what they're hoping for... if anybody goes to watch it.

Pre-Thoughts: Is Tyler Perry the Jim Varney for (cross-dressing) black people or what? I've never really got swept up into the Tyler Perry craze, and I think the guy is mostly overrated. He comes out with about 472.5 movies a year, none of which ever seem that outstanding. And as for this particular one, not even the trailer could figure out what the movie wanted to be. It was all over the place, and Medea seemed like an afterthought just to get his cash-cow character into the film... kinda like how the script for Spider-Man 3 was already written, and then studios wanted to put Venom in to get more money from fans.

Pre-Thoughts: I didn't even bother seeing the first one (with Steve Martin). Though Steve Martin himself pretty much gave me little hope in the film anyway on The Colbert Report. He said the movie plays on many levels: there's low comedy and high comedy... but not much high comedy. It's mostly low.

But then I discovered that it was produced and co-written by one of my favs, Luc Besson (Leon, La Femme Nikita, Angel-A, The Fifth Element, Unleashed, etc.). His works that he has more say in (writing/directing) are generally better than the ones he just produces, so I have hopes for this. The movie has gotten some so-so reviews, but I blame the other writer, as Besson was only a co-writer (sounds like a good excuse to me). But this is pretty much a definite for me.

Pre-Thoughts: I own the first. I saw the second in theater, but wasn't overly impressed. However, this third installment--which happens to be a prequel--actually looks like it could be decent. I might be up to checking this out.

And after my last venture into Brendan Fraser-land (Mummy 3), I'm left with a bad taste in my mouth. However, although I haven't read the books, I adore the concept. Plus, Andy Serkis is doing a (villainous) role that doesn't involve motion capture or Peter Jackson. Color me intrigued.

At first, I had no idea what this was until I read up on the plot and the cast, and then I recognized it immediately. It's a thriller staring Diane Lane (alright), Thomas Jane (better), Mickey Rourke (even better), Rosario Dawson (cool) and Joseph Gordon-Levitt (awesome). However, I did say that it was a thriller, right? Then why the hell is it being directed by the guy who did Shakespeare In Love and Captain Corelli's Mandolin? Maybe a rent... down the line.

I've only read one review for it thus far, and it was a negative one, but it was also a review from somebody on imdb (strike one) that is a hardcore fan of the video game (strike two). I think the movie looks visually stunning and really entertaining. And as I've never played the video game, I won't have that point of reference to complain from. And as I've been saying, this looks to be like for Mark Wahlberg what The Matrix was for Keanu. And I really hope it is.

But anyway, I've gotten off subject. It looks... well... remember that movie Just Like Heaven with Reese Witherspoon, Mark Ruffalo, and Jon Heder? No? That's my worries exactly.

But it has the following people in it: Meg Ryan, Annette Benning, Eva Mendes, Debra Messing, Jada Pinkett Smith, Bette Midler, Carrie Fisher, and Cloris Leachman. It probably should have been re-title "The Women... Without Huge Careers Anymore All In One Movie." So... yeah, probably not gonna see it.

The Coen's are great directors, especially in their comedies (gotta love The Big Lebowski). And amazingly enough, it will be coming here, so that's awesome.

Though I have read some early reviews that made the movie sound less than average... but they were from awhile back when it was still in the editing process (like... test screenings), so it could have been fixed by now. Title: Hamlet 2.
Pre-Thoughts: Reviews for this are all over the place... and I don't mean in where you can find them (because it had only been released in like... 100 theaters last week). A lot of reviews are pretty negative, and a handful argue otherwise. I'm not sure. I just know that as a literary kinda guy (and a guy who loves quirky comedies and theology), I think anything that mixes Hamlet and Jesus (with a musical number of 'Rock Me Sexy Jesus') has to be awesome. And it IS coming here, so that's cool. I might check it out some time.

Title: Traitor.
Pre-Thoughts: Again, a movie with mixed reviews. Some say it's a boggle of good and bad. Some say it's an epic in a hollywood shell. Some say one part is good and the other not-so-much (kinda in the same way Hancock was described). But I thought the trailers made it look pretty good. And I'm not usually into political thrillers, either, so that's saying something. I might give this a look at some point, too. If not in theater, then definitely a rental. I do wanna see it eventually.

Title: College.
Pre-Thoughts: Drake Bell and... a couple other guys... who are still in high school end up going to check out college campuses and getting mixed up in some crazy stuff... huh. At most, it'd be interesting to see Drake Bell in a lead role in something other than a Nickelodeon show or a TV commercial. And there are parts of the trailer that look kinda funny. But I don't know if I'll check this one out in theater. I'll probably see it eventually. I just don't think I'd wanna use my precious time and money (and they are precious) on it in theater.
