DVDs Or Death!

I'm being lazy today, but let's do this! DVDs Or Death!

Fireproof.

Brief Synopsis: Some Christian Movie About Firefighters And Marriage.

Comments: Just the (actual) premise of the movie makes me wanna gag. And the insanely awful acting from the trailer didn't help. Nor did Kirk Cameron.

Viewing Option: Skip (or burn... who's fireproof now?!).

RocknRolla.

Brief Synopsis: It's Guy Ritchie, So... I Really Have No Idea.

Comments: But I wanna see it. Looks like some good dark comedy with some brutal action. It's on my Netflix already.

Viewing Option: Rent.

Pride And Glory.

Brief Synopsis: Colin Farrell And Edward Norton Are Cops. Or Something. I Really Don't Know (Or Care).

Comments: Despite two good actors (well, one good, one awesome), the movie got awful reviews, and I really never cared enough to see it in theater even before I read the reviews. But I'd still like to watch it eventually if just for the two leads. So, yeah...

Viewing Option: T.V.

Lakeview Terrace.

Brief Synopsis: Sam Jackson Is A Crooked Cop And A Really Terrible Neighbor.

Comments: This actually appealed to me... but again, got awful (like... terribly awful) reviews. I still might check it out, though.

Viewing Option: Rent.

1.19.2009

DVDs Or Death!

Again, I haven't done one of these since October! But I thought it was high time to bring it on back. It's time for DVDs Or Death!

Moonlight: The Complete Series.

Brief Synopsis: Vampire Detective Falls In Love With Human Reporter.

Comments: How very Twilight-esque, I know, but it's so much better. I caught this short-lived television series while it was still on TV, and it was quite original. It's so sad that it only lasted so short a time, but if you're a fan of vampire stories, I'd really recommend this series. It's a lot of fun.

Viewing Option: T.V. (if I can find reruns... though I recommend others who have not seen it to rent).

Saw V.

Brief Synopsis: The Fifth Installment In The Saw Series.

Comments: It's certainly not one of the strongest in the series, but it's required for any fan. Like many penultimate chapters in a long series, it's mainly the calm before the storm. All the questions start to rise to the front, there's less action, and you get antsy for the conclusion. And it's been known for a while that Saw VI is going to be the end. So I think of this installment as just that: the slow, questionable calm before the epic storm.

Viewing Option: Buy (What? I have all the others).

Henry Poole Is Here.

Brief Synopsis: A Story About A Guy That Finds Jesus... On His House.

Comments: I wanted to see this, but not only did it not come to my town, but it didn't get the greatest reviews. I still want to check it out, though.

Viewing Option: Rent.

Max Payne.

Brief Synopsis: A Detective Hunts For The Truth Behind Drug-Related Murders.

Comments: Well, I didn't think the movie was terrible. It wasn't awesome, but it wasn't as terrible as most people say. It had some really cool visuals, even if the story was a bit of a mess. But I don't think I'll be going out of my way to see it again.

Viewing Option: Skip.

City Of Ember.

Brief Synopsis: An Underground City Loses Power... And It's Up To Two Children To Help.

Comments: Again, I thought the premise sounded fun, and I heard the book is good, too. But then I heard the movie was quite a mess. I might just wait for this one to hit the old telly.

Viewing Option: T.V.

Igor.

Brief Synopsis: What Would Happen If Frankenstein's Helper Helped Himself.

Comments: It looked cute, and it has a great voice cast. It didn't get terrible reviews, either, from what I remember.

Viewing Option: Rent.

The Express.

Brief Synopsis: True Story Of First Black Guy To Win Heisman Trophy.

Comments: I was never a big fan of sports movies, especially football movies... which got very old after a handful being released every single year.

Viewing Option: Skip.

Repo! The Genetic Opera.

Brief Synopsis: Rock Opera About Organ Donation.

Comments: I've been waiting for this movie for a very, very long time, regardless of its including Paris Hilton (who I've actually read is, honestly, good in this movie. Perfect for the role). But I'm incredibly excited that it's finally hitting DVD. It has endlessly brilliant reviews on both IMDb and Amazon, with only a negative one sprinkled here or there (and those people always sound like crotchety old men with sticks up their butts), so that's even more exciting. And on top of that, it's been described as Rocky Horror Picture Show meets Blade Runner meets Sweeney Todd. How awesome is that? I also read that, at some point, three of its songs were up for Oscars. Obviously that's not the case with all the songs chosen in the Globes and elsewhere, but it still says something, right?

Viewing Option: Buy.

10.27.2008

DVDs Or Death!

Haven't done one in a while, so let's get at it. DVDs Or Death!

Zombie Strippers.

Brief Synopsis: Like Snakes On A Plane, I Think The Title Is Clear Enough.

Comments: Jenna Jameson + Zombies + Strippers? Doesn't that sound like a recipe for success! Well... at the very least, it'd be B-Movie fun. That is, if it hadn't just been done... by Robert Rodriguez... in Planet Terror. Or if you replace zombies with vampires, you could compare it to From Dusk Til Dawn or even Devil's Den.

Viewing Option: T.V.

Journey to the Center of the Earth.

Brief Synopsis: Again... Read The Title.

Comments: Purposefully skipped it in theater... that can only mean one thing!

Viewing Option: Skip (or T.V., possibly).

Kitt Kittridge - An American Girl.

Brief Synopsis: I Really Think We Need More Inventive Titles.

Comments: See previous movie's comments.

Viewing Option: Skip.

9.29.2008

DVDs Or Death!

I almost forgot (and/or was too busy with... um... stuff) about this... which is ironic considering one of our few titles this week. I'm getting very close to wanting to pick the latter part of the title for DVDs Or Death!

Iron Man.

Brief Synopsis: Weapons Manufacturer Gets Change Of Heart (Literally) And Becomes Superhero.

Comments: One of the best movies of the summer, Iron Man is finally coming to DVD. The only negatives about this movie, to me, were the subpar climax and the female lead. Otherwise, this movie was awesome.

Viewing Option: Buy (like everyone else).

Forgetting Sarah Marshall.

Brief Synopsis: Girl Breaks Up With Guy, Then Both End Up In Hawaii.

Comments: It's a Judd Apatow vehicle, but it only got so-so reviews. Didn't see it in theater, but I'll end up checking it out at some point, anyway.

Viewing Option: Rent.

Taxi To The Darkside.

Brief Synopsis: Documentary About U.S. Torture In Middle East.

Comments: Got a lot of recognition, obviously. I've been getting more and more into documentaries lately, so I might check it out.

Viewing Option: Rent or TV.

9.22.2008

DVDs Or Death!

Monday = DVDs Or Death!

Leatherheads.

Brief Synopsis: The Beginning Of Football.

Comments: I'm not a big fan of sports films, and I heard this one isn't even too worth it on its own.

Viewing Option: T.V.

Run, Fat Boy, Run.

Brief Synopsis: A Portly Loser Gets In Shape To Run A Marathon And Win Back Love.

Comments: I really loved this movie in theater, and I love Simon Pegg, so I would really love to own this. And it's about time this came out, too! I've been waiting ages.

Viewing Option: Buy.

Sex and the City.

Brief Synopsis: Big Screen Version Of Small Screen, Estrogen-Filled Television Show.

Comments: Not a fan of the show, didn't see this in theaters, probably won't see it at home.

Viewing Option: Skip.

9.15.2008

DVDs Or Death!

By God, it's been a month, but I will post a freakin DVDs Or Death!

88 Minutes.

Brief Synopsis: College Professor Gets Death Threat And Must Solve It In 88 Minutes Or Die.

Comments: Already saw this about a year before it even hit theater (no hyperbole there, folks. This movie was pushed back like nobody's business... which is exactly what it got in theater).

Viewing Option: Skip Altogether.

Young@Heart.

Brief Synopsis: Documentary About Old Folks Singing Rock/Punk Songs.

Comments: It looked... what's the word... cute. I might check it out at some point just for a few giggles.

Viewing Option: Rent or T.V.

Speed Racer.

Brief Synopsis: Live-Action (Sorta) Movie Version Of Classic Anime.

Comments: I was one of the few who saw this in theater... and as I said then, the only people saying bad things about this movie were people who didn't bother to see it. Every review I read from people who actually saw it have been incredibly positive (stuffy professional critics notwithstanding). This movie was freakin awesome.

Viewing Option: Buy.

Made Of Honor.

Brief Synopsis: Male Best Friend Becomes Maid Of Honor At Secret Love's Wedding.

Comments: Interesting concept, though it didn't get a bunch of good reviews. My mom and sister saw it and enjoyed it, though, and the only movies they ever turn their noses up at are, you know, good ones that require more than 'no brain'.

Viewing Option: T.V. or Skip.

Avatar: The Last Airbender - Complete Book 3 Collection.

Brief Synopsis: The Final Season Of Great American Anime Series.

Comments: I wish I owned the first two seasons on DVD. Alas, no time or money. But yeah, this was one of my favorite shows ever, and it was actually fully completed within 3 seasons. Forget those shows nowadays that have to drag everything out for 8 seasons in which not much happens and every other season is only so-so... this show actually knows how to please and everything is done absolutely right. It only got better with every season, and with only 3 seasons, you don't have to wait forever to get the full story.

Viewing Option: T.V. Re-Runs or Eventual Buy (whenever I have time/money).

8.25.2008

DVDs Or Death!

Because I'm tired from a super-long, exhausting day (and have to do it all over again tomorrow... and the day after that... and the day after that... etc.), it's now time for DVDs Or Death!

The Nightmare Before Christmas - Special Edition.

Brief Synopsis: Classic Claymation Musical About Halloween Finding Christmas!

Comments: For the longest time, I looked and looked for this movie on DVD with no avail. And now it's finally hitting DVD with a special edition release. I'm so there.

Viewing Option: Buy.

Heroes: Season Two.

Brief Synopsis: Season Two Of Great Superhero TV Show.

Comments: I want to get this, because I love this show, but I have neither the money to spend on it nor the time to watch it at the moment. And it's also seen as an inferior season to the incredibly amazing first season... but what show's second season didn't suck? Plus, Volume 3: Villains looks orgasmic.

Viewing Option: Eventual Buy (Otherwise TV).

What Happens In Vegas.

Brief Synopsis: Ashton Kutcher And Cameron Diaz Get Drunk-Married In Vegas And Stuff Happens After That.

Comments: Didn't care too much about this one in theater, but a lot of people I've talked to said it's really funny... and it did stay in theater for ages. I might check it out at some point. But I'm in no hurry.

Viewing Option: Rent or TV.

Redbelt.

Brief Synopsis: A Movie About A Conflicted Martial Arts Instructor.

Comments: It didn't come out here, but I heard pretty mixed reviews of it when it did first come out to theater. I'm not bursting at the seams to see this, even though the lead actor in it (guy with hard to say/spell name) is pretty good.

Viewing Option: Rent or TV.

The Little Mermaid - Ariel's Beginning.

Brief Synopsis: The Story Of Ariel's Mother (Or Something Like That)... A Prequel To The Original.

Comments: Eh... the first was a classic, but this probably won't be for me. No thanks.

Viewing Option: Skip.

8.18.2008

DVDs Or Death!

There's a lot out this week... so you better follow the code of... DVDs Or Death!

Prom Night.

Brief Synopsis: Slasher Flick Based At A Prom.

Comments: If I wanted to pay to see this, I would have seen it in theater... but I didn't, so I'm not.

Viewing Option: T.V. or Skip.

Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus: Best Of Both Worlds Concert 3-D.

Brief Synopsis: Um... I Think The Title Couldn't Be More Specific If It Were Snakes On A Plane.

Comments: No thanks.

Viewing Option: Skip.

Miss Pettigrew Lives For A Day.

Brief Synopsis: Clumsy Woman Out Of Work Becomes Glamour Queen's Nanny.

Comments: It seems at least somewhat enjoyable.

Viewing Option: Rent or T.V.

Recount.

Brief Synopsis: Movie Version Of Florida's Screw-Up In 2000 Presidential Election.

Comments: It got a lot of acclaim, from what I heard, but I really don't care to re-live the moment Bush cheated himself into office.

Viewing Option: Skip.

Street Kings.

Brief Synopsis: Keanu Reeves Is A Crooked Cop... And Other Stuff Happens, Too.

Comments: Most reviews for this were mixed, but I'm sure I'll check it out at some point anyway.

Viewing Option: Rent or T.V.

The Scorpion King 2: Rise of a Warrior.

Brief Synopsis: Prequel To The Scorpion King... Which Was, In Itself, A Prequel.

Comments: And on that note... did there really need to be a Scorpion King 1?

Viewing Option: Skip.

Nixon.

Brief Synopsis: Well... It's About Richard Nixon.

Comments: Again... it's about Richard Nixon. See 'Recount'.

Viewing Option: Skip.

The Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles - Season One.

Brief Synopsis: Season One Of T.V. Show That Occurs After Terminator 2.

Comments: I loved the season and can't wait for season 2 to begin. However, I rarely buy television shows on DVD, and only do so when I'm head-over-heals for whatever it is, and I just need it.

Viewing Option: T.V. or Skip.

The Fletch Collection.

Brief Synopsis: Both Fletch Movies... One Price!

Comments: Okay, so I'm only putting this here because of my homeboy Fletch over at Blog Cabins. I've never seen either Fletch movie (though I have heard of them, even prior to frequenting the Cabins). I'll check them out at some point, I'm sure.

Viewing Option: Rent or T.V.

8.04.2008

DVDs Or Death!

You know it. DVDs Or Death!

The Counterfeiters.

Brief Synopsis: True Story. Nazis. Counterfeiting. What More Could You Ask For?

Comments: Well, it did win the Academy Award for Best Foreign Film, so that has to account for something, right? Dunno if I'll see it anytime soon, but I wouldn't mind checking it out at some point.

Viewing Option: Rent.

Nim's Island.

Brief Synopsis: Fantasy Movie With Abigail Breslin Who Lives On Deserted Island.

Comments: It looks almost too fantastical (and childish) for my tastes.

Viewing Option: TV or Skip.

Starship Troopers 3: Marauder.

Brief Synopsis: More Big Bugs!

Comments: I know the first has a big cult following, but... people actually saw the second one? I know I didn't.

Viewing Option: Skip.

7.28.2008

DVDs Or Death!

Dum da dum! DVDs Or Death! (Man, if feels like I JUST did this...).

The Lost Boys: The Tribe.

Brief Synopsis: Follow-Up To Nearly 20-Year-Old Vampire Flick.

Comments: So THAT'S where the Corey's have been!

Viewing Option: Skip.

Doomsday.

Brief Synopsis: Ridiculousness On A Spoon.

Comments: Seriously, this movie was crazy bizarre. But I can't deny it was highly enjoyable.

Viewing Option: Tempted To Buy (Otherwise TV).

Never Back Down.

Brief Synopsis: Like Fight Club, But Lame.

Comments: My sister wanted to see this but... unlike the title suggests... I had to back down.

Viewing Option: TV or Skip.

Harold and Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay.

Brief Synopsis: Like The First One, But Lame.

Comments: I'd rather go to White Castle.

Viewing Option: TV or Skip.

7.14.2008

DVDs Or Death!

There's a lot coming out on DVD this week. That's right, it's time for DVDs Or Death!

The Bank Job.

Brief Synopsis: True Story Of A Bank Robbery Gone Bad.

Comments:
Saw it in theater, and it irked me then. I'm a fan of heist films, as I've said numerous times already, but there was just something about the movie I didn't care for.

Viewing Option:
T.V.

Penelope.

Brief Synopsis: Girl With Pig Nose Discovers True Love And Inner Beauty.

Comments:
I just thought the movie looked weird. It didn't come to my theater, and it got a bunch of bad review, so I dunno...

Viewing Option:
T.V.

College Road Trip.

Brief Synopsis: A Girl's Overprotective Father Takes Her On College Road Trip.

Comments:
Didn't care to see it in theater, don't care to now.

Viewing Option:
Skip.

Step Up 2 The Streets.

Brief Synopsis: Dance Movie With Cool... Dancing.

Comments:
I was interested when it came to theater, but never saw it. This isn't the kind of movie you see for the plot or characters, but for the choreography and dancing. And I am a fan of watching dancing, and the trailer showed some really cool looking stuff.

Viewing Option:
Rent.

Shutter.

Brief Synopsis: Yet Another Japanese Horror Remake. They're All The Same. (Bad).

Comments:
Didn't care when it came out, and I don't care now.

Viewing Option:
Skip.

Secretary.

Brief Synopsis: Re-Release Of Cult Classic That Has Maggie Gyllenhaal Naked A Lot.

Comments:
Who wouldn't want that? I still have yet to see this movie, though, and I'll check it out at some point, but I'm in no rush.

Viewing Option:
T.V.

6.30.2008

DVDs Or Death!

Yup... that time again! DVDs Or Death! (of course I missed last week, an interesting week, and remembered this week, a boring week).

Vantage Point.

Brief Synopsis:
A Political Bombing/Assassination Attempt Told In Multiple Perspectives.

Comments:
Well, I saw it in theater and... it was alright. It wasn't the best attempt at this type of chronology that I've seen (in fact, it was rather flawed). But points of it were entertaining, at least, specifically Forest Whitaker's story.

Viewing Option:
Buy or TV (If I buy it, it's because I'm addicted to stories with funky narratives).

Tyler Perry's Meet The Browns.

Brief Synopsis:
Um... Family? And Madea shows up at some point.

Comments: Tyler Perry is vastly overrated.

Viewing Option: Skip.

6.16.2008

DVDs Or Death!

It's that time of the week again (and I almost forgot... again). It's DVDs OR DEATH!

Be Kind Rewind.

Brief Synopsis: Jack Black Erases VHS Tapes And He And Mos Def Re-film Them.

Comments: I was interested in seeing this when it was in theater, but, alas, it never came here.

Viewing Option: Rent.

Fool's Gold.

Brief Synopsis: Matthew McConaughey And Kate Hudson Search For Buried Treasure.

Comments: This one looked... alright. My mom really wanted to see it, so I'll probably end up seeing it on a rental.

Viewing Option: Rent or TV.

Under the Same Moon.

Brief Synopsis: Mexican Boy Goes Through Illegal Immigration To Find Mother After Grandmother Dies.

Comments: I like foreign movies, and this one looked really good. This one did come here, amazingly enough, but I never got around to seeing it. I definitely want to check it out, though.

Viewing Option: Rent.

Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins.

Brief Synopsis: A Successful Martin Lawrence Comes Home To Small Town Family.

Comments: Um... no thanks.

Viewing Option: TV or Skip Altogether.

6.09.2008

DVDs Or Death!

I apologize for missing this feature for the past month or so, but it's back! So don't fret any more! It's time once again for... DVDs OR DEATH!

The Other Boleyn Girl.

Brief Synopsis: Natalie Portman And Scarlett Johansson Playing Slutty Sisters And Boning Eric Bana's Henry VIII.

Comments: I wanted to see this one in theater, but it didn't even come here. Though I mostly wanted to see it because I love both Natalie and Scarlett. But I've since heard this movie was pretty bad and rather boring.

Viewing Option: Rent or TV.

The Bucket List.

Brief Synopsis: Jack Nicholson And Morgan Freeman Do Things Before They Die.

Comments: I saw it in theater. It was pretty decent, though I probably wouldn't buy it. Sean Hayes (Jack from Will & Grace) was the best thing about the movie, and I didn't really care for Mr. Nicholson in it.

Viewing Option: Wait for TV.

Jumper.

Brief Synopsis: Kid Who Teleports Meets Other Kid Who Teleports And Fights Sam Jackson.

Comments: Again, saw it in theater... and it was a total let-down.

Viewing Option: Wait for TV (if just to see the teleporting scenes).

Funny Games.

Brief Synopsis: Two Guys Take Family Hostage And Do Torturous Things.

Comments: This was obviously too small of a movie to come here, though I've heard mixed reviews. Though I hadn't actually heard of the movie until I read reviews, and I've still yet to even watch a trailer.

Viewing Option: Rent.

5.12.2008

DVDs Or Death!

It's that time again, and it's yet another boring week for DVDs.

Mad Money.

Brief Synopsis: Diane Keaton. Queen Latifah. Katie Holmes... As Bank Robbers.

Comments: Um... no thanks.

Viewing Option: Wait for TV (if at all).

Untraceable.

Brief Synopsis: Psycho Makes The World Into Killers Via Website.

Comments: It was actually a pretty decent movie, as I saw it in theater. But I don't think it's worth a buy. For everybody else, it'd be a good rent. But for me...

Viewing Option: Wait for TV.

The Great Debaters.

Brief Synopsis: A Heartfelt Movie About A Debate Team.

Comments: It got good reviews, so I might check this out at some point.

Viewing Option: Rent or Wait for TV.

The Indiana Jones Trilogy.

Brief Synopsis: Um... It's Indiana Jones.

Comments: I've just DVR'd the entire trilogy over the weekend and have been watching them (probably to have a discussion on them soon). If you're an uber-fan and don't already own them, these are special editions, so go for it.

Viewing Option: Already Have Them On TV.

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe [Blu-Ray].

Brief Synopsis: Blu-Ray Re-Release Of Four Kids Who Go To Another World.

Comments: Yeah... this movie is turning into one of those that continually re-releases multiple versions just to milk it for all it's worth (and it helps that the next movie is coming out soon). So if you're a Blu-Ray freak and don't already own it, go ahead. As for me, I don't own a Blu-Ray player, but I don't have the movie already (it was okay, but not super-awesome).

Viewing Option: Watch on TV or Skip Altogether.

5.05.2008

DVDs Or Death!

It's that time of the week again, so you know what that means? DVDs Or DEATH! Well... maybe not so much death this week... it's a pretty boring week, really.

I'm Not There.

Brief Synopsis: Bob Dylan. Many Different Actors/Actresses.

Comments: Not overly excited about this one. There really isn't much else to say about it.

Viewing Option: Wait for TV.

P.S. I Love You.

Brief Synopsis: Generic Chick Flick.

Comments: Yet again, not overly excited about this one. Again, there really isn't much else to say about it.

Viewing Option: Wait for TV (or the inevitable rental via my mother).

Twister.

Brief Synopsis: Bill Paxton Chases Tornadoes. Re-Release.

Comments: Yet another re-release on special edition DVD. I think we already own this one on VHS somewhere...

Viewing Option: See previous.

Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie.

Brief Synopsis: Bad Movie... Being Made Fun Of In A Great Movie.

Comments: I have a VHS recording of this, but I'd LOVE to own the DVD. It's hilarious and totally worth the buy.

Viewing Option: Buy.

The 4400: The Complete Fourth Season.

Brief Synopsis: Like Heroes... But They Did It First.

Comments: The reason I mention this one is because not many people knew about this show. It was a great show that came on USA every summer (taking a painfully long amount of time waiting between seasons... one season even skipped a year). It's similar to Heroes in that a lot of ordinary people get extraordinary powers. 4400 people throughout time are abducted into the future and injected with a special enzyme that gives them special abilities. They are then placed back all within the same time period... some learn to control their powers, some don't. But they know one thing for sure: There's a catastrophe coming that they are meant to stop, and there are some people out there who don't want them to. Really great underrated show. Unfortunately, it only lasted four seasons before it was canceled... which totally sucks.

Viewing Option: Watch Re-Runs On TV.

4.28.2008

DVDs Or Death!

I know I haven't posted anything since last week when I did this, but it's been a super-busy week. In this time span, I've written 2 papers, a case study, other bits of homework, and 5 chapters for my newest novel (2/3s of the way done!). Anyway, here's the newest DVD update. These will be coming out tomorrow... and there's really nothing all that spectacular (save for one).

The Golden Compass.

Brief Synopsis: Bad people want to separate animals from people. Controversial book-to-film. But not really.

Comments: This one is probably the big blockbuster DVD of the week. I've read all the books and I saw this one in theater. It had all this controversial hype around it, and it was probably as least controversial as they could have made it. There's only single disc versions, too. It wasn't God-awful (no pun intended), but the only reason I would buy this is if they released a version with the... you know... ending... that the movie decided to skip. And I don't mean to say it like that to avoid spoilers. The movie actually skipped the ending.

Viewing Option: Wait for TV (or special edition DVD).

27 Dresses.

Brief Synopsis: Always the Bridesmaid, Never the Bride: The Movie.

Comments: Didn't care about seeing this one in theater, don't really care too much now that it's out on DVD. 1 disc.

Viewing Option: Wait for TV.

The Diving Bell and the Butterfly.

Brief Synopsis: Paraplegic blinks a novel with one eye.

Comments: I totally wanted to see this when it was in theater, but it never came here. I still really wanna see it, and I heard it's awesome. I haven't decided if I wanna buy it or rent it yet, but it feels like one of those impulsive buy kinda movies.

Viewing Option: Buy or Rent.

First Knight.

Brief Synopsis: 90s Re-release of Sean Connery Camelot film.

Comments: Just thought this was worth a mention that it was being re-released. If you don't already own it... or haven't seen it enough to last you a lifetime... go for it.

Viewing Option: This movie already comes on TV.

Joseph Campbell - Mythos II.

Brief Synopsis: Founder of the monomyth. Inspiration for millions (including Star Wars). PBS documentary.

Comments: I only bring this one up because Joseph Campbell was such a genius in the world of literature (and then some). He founded the monomyth format (which is the basic 'Quest' format that has been used since the beginning of stories themselves... he just organized it). He inspired George Lucas into writing Star Wars (which follows the monomyth dead-on). He inspired Christopher Vogler to re-work the monomyth format and use it for screenplays, which is used for basically any film school now (and has inspired such works as The Lion King).

Viewing Option: N/A. I already know all I want about Joseph Campbell and the monomyth.

4.21.2008

DVDs Or Death!

I wanted to start a new thing here at R2D2, where I briefly discuss the upcoming DVDs of the week (though typically before Tuesday if I can help it...). So yeah, here I go.

Cloverfield.

Brief Synopsis: Monster Movie. Shaky Cam. All About The Characters.

Comments: This is probably the big one of the week. There's no special edition, just a normal 1 disc box. However, as this movie totally rocked in theater (and I totally missed the creature dropping into the water at the end the first time around), I'm totally getting this.

Viewing Option: Buy.

The Orphanage.

Brief Synopsis: Spanish. Ghost Story. Psychological Thriller.

Comments: Saw it in theater, as well, and loved it. Again, there just seems to be a 1 disc box for this one. But I totally less-than-three this movie.

Viewing Option: Buy.

The Savages.

Brief Synopsis: Quirky Indie Movie About Family.

Comments: Haven't seen it, but I've heard good things. Again, normal 1 disc box. Might check it out.

Viewing Option: Rent.

One Missed Call.

Brief Synopsis: J-Horror Remake. Death Calls Cell Phones. People Die.

Comments: Didn't see it in theater, and from what I've heard, that's a good thing. 1 disc box.

Viewing Option: Wait for TV (if at all).

My Boy Jack.

Brief Synopsis: Rudyard Kipling's Son. War Drama.

Comments: It's Dan Radcliffe (Harry Potter) in a war drama. I like seeing the HP gang in other movies (Rupert Grint's Driving Lessons is amazing). 1 disc. Wouldn't mind checking this one out.

Viewing Option: Rent.

Charlie Wilson's War.

Brief Synopsis: Behind-The-Scenes Of War.

Comments: This looked... okay... from the trailers. It didn't really excite me though. 1 disc.

Viewing Option: Rent or TV... don't really care either way.
