R2D2... The One With A Blog Update.

Hey guys and gals. I just wanted to let y'all know there's been a few changes/additions to the blog. Obviously most of you have noticed, in the last couple months or however long it's been, the "Last 5 Films I Saw" thing on the top left corner. It started as 3, but I eventually bumped it to 5. Just for clarification, these aren't necessarily the EXACT last 5 I saw, but the last 5 NEW movies I saw. So if I just watch a movie I've already seen before, I won't put it up on that scrolling list. Granted, I'm watching new stuff almost all the time, so the bulk of it will be pretty spot on with what I'm watching.

Next, you might notice a new page added to the menu under the header called "The Study." This page has a handful of scrolling box lists on it divulging every movie I've ever seen. The first box is every movie in alphabetical order. The lists after that, clearly, are separated by decade. Within those, I have them in chronological order through the decade. And if there is more than one movie for that year (not necessarily the case for the earlier years, but definitely for the later ones), I put the movies of each year in alphabetical order. I want to thank, again, Rachel for letting me use her own list as a starting point. It really helped save time (only took me about 4-5 days to do all the lists).

Finally, a couple other new changes in the menu part. Since I haven't done a book review in forever, I took the book review section from the menu bar and placed all the links in a drop-down menu under "The Closet" section. Also, I brought back "The Vlog" section. Keep an eye on that section, because I will update it every now and then, and you might get an idea of what's to come in future episodes. Or if you just want an easy way to go back and look at older episodes, that works, too.

Anyway, I think that's about it! Thank you to everyone who nominated and/or voted for me for this year's Lammy's. Lost out to the same people again this year, but it's still great being nominated. Thanks for your continued support and any comments you have on anything is always welcome and appreciated!

The Demented Podcast #16 - Random Ramblings From The Supermassive Black Hole.

I decided to reschedule my DemPod release dates after the previous episode. So it's still continuing to be every two weeks from this point on, if you were wondering. Regardless, I recorded this episode with Sebastian a week ago, where we talk about our feelings on summer films from now through the end of August--the good, the bad, and the sleepers.

But before that, we take on The Challenge and some feedback (please leave more!). And after the discussion, he climbs The Tower. Let's just say... he's not happy with The Tower. Listen and find out why!

Current Tower Leaderboard

The Demented Podcast #15 - The Zed Word Vs. The Greater Good (Live!).

Not only is this episode a week late, but it's also one of the shortest to date--for that, I apologize. However, the reasoning behind that (at least the lateness) was due to the fact... it was recorded live and in person! That's right, returning guest Rachel Thuro joined me (and her husband sitting off a ways, staring at us awkwardly the majority of the time) to discuss and compare the first two films in Edgar Wright's Blood and Ice Cream Trilogy: Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz.

After a nice discussion, we have our Versus. Who would win in a fight between the zombies and the village from Fuzz? It's really no contest. But you know what is? The Demented Tower! Rachel climbs it, and she has a lot to live up to as not only the highest scorer the previous season, but also as the current Battle Royale champion! And with her face-to-face with me, I can assure you she couldn't cheat. (As if she would do such a thing!)

The Demented Podcast #14 - The Simon And Jobe Show.

In this episode, I'm joined from across the pond by Simon Columb, former alum of the Simon and Jo Film Show podcast. Together, we do a The Challenge that brings together the generational gap before discussing everything you could ever want to know about our DVD collections and similar things, such as buying versus renting.

From there we begin our climb of The Tower. It's quite a climb, indeed. And I do apologize again for a terrible occurrence in the second round. You'll know what I mean when you get there. Until then, have a listen and see if you think Simon will make it to the top.

The Demented Podcast #13 - Muppets Vs. Toons.

For the show's first return guest for a regular episode, we're introducing a new format. But never fear, it's only for returning guests. First-timers will still get a chance to try out the original format, as well. So on tap for this new format... is the very first guest I had, who tested out the original format first, too! That's right, it's Jess from Insight into Entertainment.

The new format entails the guest choosing a movie and me choosing a movie and discussing both. Jess chose The Muppets Take Manhattan, while I chose Who Framed Roger Rabbit? After a short discussion on both, we get into a new segment entitled Versus, where we have an interesting discussion on who would win in an epic battle to the death. This week? Muppets Vs. Toons. We, of course, have our own thoughts. But after you listen, make sure to leave us your own on who you think would win (among all your other thoughts, too, of course).

Then we wrap up the show with The Tower. After losing in the first round of the Battle Royale, Jess is determined to redeem herself. But does she do it? Listen and find out!

Movie Alphabet Meme #2.

Tom over at Movie Reviews by Tom Clift did this recently and I thought it'd be fun. I've done it in the past, about 3 years ago, which you can see here. I think it's pretty fascinating to see some of the similarities and differences between the two over just 3 years. This time, there weren't really any specifications on how to choose the movies, but I'm assuming it's a favorite movie that begins with that particular letter of the alphabet. So I'm gonna go ahead and do that now. And if any of you would like to play along, go for it!

The Demented Podcast #12 - Demented Demented Podcast.

An episode so good I had to give it to y'all a day early. For this episode, our dynamic hosts are joined by one Nick of Random Ramblings of a Demented Doorknob. We attempt to pull off a The Challenge of... feminine proportions. Then we get into our main discussion: people's fascination with aliens in movies along with our Top 3 Favorite Non-Alien Franchise Alien Movies. It's a great discussion that begins with ponderings of the fear of the unknown... and ends with horny vacuum cleaners.

Then we get into... The Leaning Tower of the Demented! Our fantastic host takes us through a hilarious 2-man show that is certainly something you don't want to miss.

The Demented Podcast #11 - Random Bargain Doorknob Bin Podcast Review.

Returning to our regularly scheduled programming, we come back into what I suppose could be called Season 2. And for this episode, I'm joined by Nolahn of Bargain Bin Review and the Lair of the Unwanted podcast, which he co-hosts with Jason Soto. We do some feedback before we take on a rather... interesting... The Challenge before getting into our main topic.

And what is that main topic? What Makes Bad Movies Good. A fascinating discussion, really. We figured most people might watch a so-bad-its-good movie, but not really think about what makes it good compared to movies that are just bad. (And, yes, The Room is brought up.)

Finally, we end climbing The Tower. It's a new season, so that means a new leaderboard. And so far, Nolahn has started us off setting records. Listen to find out!

Note: We had a ton of connection problems while recording. Between having to re-call a few times and have 3 separate recording files, there was a lot of editing done on this episode. You might still be able to hear some distortion every now and then when Nolahn speaks, but that's about it. There are also a few deleted conversations that I thought about leaving in (like Nolahn talking to the listeners while I hunted down information), but I cut them for time purposes... sorry, Nolahn! Anyway...

The Demented Podcast #10 - Battle Royale (And/Or The Reel Entertainment Ramblings For Dark Cinema Reviews).

In this tenth episode, we take a break from the usual format and have us a long, star-studded game of The Demented Tower. On hand are the Top 5 scorers from the previous 9 episodes: Rachel, James, Hatter, Jess, and Tom. Together, we have a pretty fun time playing The Tower and taunting and teasing each other in the process.

But who comes out on top? Will it be the Top Leaderboard scorer, Rachel, who might only be there because she won the bonus question? Will it be fan favorite James, who sped through his original game to get one of the highest scores without the bonus question? Perhaps it'll be Hatter, the man nobody is counting on winning. It could also be Jess, the first person to ever play the game and who managed to stay in the Top 4 the entire time. But, quite possibly, it could be Tom, who showed skill that could rival James and is only at the disadvantageous bottom position because he missed his bonus question.

Listen and find out!

Also, keep an ear out for some fun sound bytes sprinkled throughout not only from Mortal Kombat (as per usual), but also from a film we all love--The Room. And stick around after the closing music for a bonus clip cut out of the main part of the episode. (And special thanks to Rachel for the awesome alternate title for the episode.)

That being said, enjoy! Thanks goes out to Kevin MacLeod's Incompetech website for great, royalty-free music. And thanks to Google for helping me find a website that will give me free video game audio samples. Also, for this particular episode, thanks to this awesome website for the soundclips from The Room.

Random Ramblings of a Demented DoorVlog S2.12 (The Season Finale).

Here's episode S2.12.

This is it, folks... The Season 2 Finale! Probably the greatest bits of footage I've ever put together... and now you get to see it--on my birthday!

Last time on The Vlog: If you've gotten this far, you should know what's going on by now. If not, the fastest way to get a recap is to watch the promo I posted last week. You can click here to see it. It's the second video in that post.

So, I want to give a special thanks to all of you who guested this season! Some of the season's best moments came from y'all, especially shown through some wicked improv skills. Season 3 won't be coming for at least a few months at minimum, maybe later than that, but I've already got some ideas brewing (I even have the new opening credits already made). This particular episode was fun to put together--y'all gave me some great footage (I'm hardly in this episode), and it was great editing it together. Now, this episode was kept pretty secret from everyone involved. When I handed out scripts, I gave only what was necessary for the actor/actress to know. If there was a dialogue (like a phone conversation), I gave both sides for context, but often removed names or clues that gave away who it could be--unless the name was in the dialogue said by them. So most of these guest actors had no idea who they were talking to or, really, about what. Jason probably had the biggest clues, but even he wasn't handed everything. So I'm pretty excited to see what everyone thinks. Overall, I'm really happy with how this turned out. I have no idea how I'm going to top it next season, especially since the climax of this finale came from a spur-of-the-moment idea... but I'll think of something, I'm sure. Anyway, I'll not keep y'all bored with my ramblings. I'll let y'all at it. Enjoy!

2.19.2011

The Demented Podcast #9 - MILDcast.

It's the last guest before the big Battle Royale, and what a guest it is! I'm joined by Kai Parker of The List and the MILFcast. He introduces himself to those who, for whatever reason, aren't already acquainted. Then we get into The Challenge. This was the actually second time in all 9 episodes thus far where we actually had to go back and redo The Challenge because we felt the first time wasn't good enough.

From there, we get into our main discussion where we talk about--what else?--boobs. Well, nudity in films in general... as well as some of our favorites. This isn't too bad of a misogynistic episode, though, ladies. Kai shows himself to have morals and show who he really is... on the inside. It's quite touching.

Then we get into The Demented Tower. Kai is the last person who can qualify for the Battle Royale--but does he do it? I'll just say that, at the end, he adds on to his chivalrous nature by proving himself a gentleman and a scholar and doing something quite noble. You'll have to listen and find out what!

On an interesting side-note, this episode had some of the biggest mess-ups I've ever had. Between having to redo The Challenge and messing up multiple times with my math all during The Tower, my head was a bit screwy throughout (and that's not even including some ringing phones and a break or two). Of course, none of you will ever hear any of that due to the magic of editing, so this is kinda pointless... but whatever! NOTE: I don't know how I missed this during my listen-through in editing, but I left in the beginning of one of the thousand attempts at giving Kai his score in one round of The Tower, so it sounds like I'm repeating myself briefly at one point. Just ignore it. Also, the reason Kai "loves that lemur" is because I had to keep going back and re-give him his stamina and score about 3 times as I suck at math.

Current Leaderboard (The Demented Tower):
1) Rachel - 179 Points
2) James - 135 Points
3) Hatter - 131 Points
4) Jess - 95 Points
5) Tom - 92.5 Points
6) Dylan - 90.5 Points
7) Jason - 33 Points
8) Travis - 32.5 Points

Random Ramblings of a Demented DoorVlog S2.11 + S2.12 Promo.

Here's episode S2.11.

This episode pretty much is just setting up for the big finale next week.

Last time on The Vlog: DPR, who is now just Nick because he sent the other Nick into the past to become DPR (confused yet?), had originally hired a super-hacker named Dylan to find out information about Jason Soto and his plans. Dylan has been giving him information little by little. Meanwhile, DPR had to deal with magical issues that Jason was somehow inflicting upon them, and he got a little help from a witch known only as RT (who ended up sending them the time travel device to send Nick back in time in the first place). He still doesn't know Jason's ultimate plan--Plan 9--but he's got to find out soon... and do something about it.

Having already finished the Season 2 Finale by this point, this was the last episode I needed to film. I've officially wrapped on the season! Hooray! And man, did I try to make it a long one. The original cut was over 7 minutes long, and not all of that was plot. I had to cut two segments (a One Sentence Review and a bit where I'm just regular Vlogging for once) for time sake. This episode will also feature the last Completely Random Movie Comparison. There are two versions of it--maybe some day you'll get to see the alternate take. And I'm going to say now... this episode includes my favorite line I've ever written for this show thus far, and it's made even better by the person who performed it. That's all I'll say.

Anywho... enjoy!

Also! In honor of next weekend's Season 2 Finale, I've put together a promo trailer for the episode. I quite like it, myself. Anyway, the promo includes a lot of footage from previous episodes (including today's), but it also includes some never-before-seen footage from the upcoming finale. So without further ado, here it is:

Random Ramblings of a Demented DoorVlog S2.10.

Note: If you missed the post, I just put up The Demented Podcast #8 a few hours ago, right below this post. Check it out!

---------------------------------

Here's episode S2.10.

This episode finally gives us an explanation for the Season 2 LOST opening.

Last time on The Vlog: The season opened with the opening of an eye. "Nick" looked around, confused, and without memory. He had no idea how he got there. He had something around his neck, his glasses on his chest, and "JS" written on his hand. Everything else was a blur. He ends up becoming Dramatic Post Reader. Fast forward and we have DPR contacting a witch who goes by RT to help them by giving them a time travel device. She didn't want to do it, but she did. And now Nick and DPR are awaiting her package.

This particular episode was a bitch to make... and you'll understand why when you see it. It's totally necessary to the plot, of course, but actually making it took a while. I even almost ran out of battery (I got down to about 2 minutes or so). And then editing it took a few hours, something that's never happened before. So the episode is a couple minutes longer than the limit, but I hope you can forgive me on that. I didn't want to cut anything, as the plot stuff is vital and the random stuff is (mostly) thematic. So I hope y'all like it. Oh, and randomly, I tried saving the video in a different format than usual to see if that helps boost the quality. We'll see if that works.

Anywho... enjoy!

2.05.2011

The Demented Podcast #8 - Demented Cabins.

This has been a long-time coming, but I finally managed to wrangle Dylan Fields of Blog Cabins onto the show. We kick off with some feedback and then get into a "The Challenge" that is so outrageous, it was very difficult to edit. We were making ourselves laugh so hard we could barely get through the scene. I tried to edit out most of the laughing, but you might still hear tinges of it here and there.

From there, we get into our main topic. Dylan had us discussing films that aren't musicals but could be. Each of us came prepared with 3 films, gave them composers and songs--some titled--and explained where they would be in the film and who would sing them. Let's just say we start with The Room and True Romance, and it only gets better from there.

Then Dylan takes on The Tower. Not only does he have his eye on Rachel's #1 spot, much like many others, but he might just have the ability to pull it off. Does he do it? Listen and find out!

Current Leaderboard (The Demented Tower):
1) Rachel - 179 Points
2) James - 135 Points
3) Hatter - 131 Points
4) Jess - 95 Points
5) Tom - 92.5 Points
6) Jason - 33 Points
7) Travis - 32.5 Points

You can listen to this episode on the player below or by subscribing through iTunes.

Random Ramblings of a Demented DoorVlog S2.9.

Here's episode S2.9.

This particular episode shows the aftermath of the Season 1 finale, but doesn't really reference anything else from the first season.

Last time on The Vlog: Throughout the season, DPR has been working to stop a bunch of crazy (sometimes magical) things plaguing the apartment. He's even gotten a bit of help here and there from a mysterious figure known only as RT. In the previous episode, we saw what went down behind the scenes in the Season 1 finale and ending where Nick stabs DPR, leaving him for dead. However, Bill--owing DPR a favor--comes in to help.

I suppose to make up for the fact that my last few have been longer than usual, this one is shorter than usual. However, we also finally get to see our next guest character, the mysterious "RT" who has been helping DPR throughout the season. Besides that wonderful performance, it's not too big of an episode on my end. It's mostly setting us up for the finale, which is coming in 3 weeks. That's right, folks. There are only 3 episodes left of the season! And I promise you, it will be a finale you won't soon forget. I already have some footage, and it's flippin' amazing. Everything is being kept top secret, even from those participating (their scripts were edited to include only what they needed to say, sometimes even removing the identities of those they're supposed to be talking to. And if anything was revealed through their own dialogue, they've been sworn to secrecy). It'll be a star-studded cast including not one, not two, not even three or four... but FIVE guest characters. Plus myself... and a few other surprises. So keep watching!

Anywho... enjoy!

1.23.2011

Random Ramblings of a Demented DoorVlog S2.8.

Here's episode S2.8.

This particular episode references the Season 1 finale. If you need a refresher on how things went down, I'd recommend re-watching it (I know, it's a long one...) but if you don't feel like doing that, here's some info that might help.

Previously, in Season 1 of The Vlog: Nick wakes up in his dark bathroom and discovers he's being held captive by somebody named JS, as shown to him through some audio on his laptop. Meanwhile, DPR is reading something from Nick's own blog. Nick ends up escaping the bathroom with a knife and tries to say something nice about another blogger. Unfortunately, he "can't do it" and rushes off to his room, where he freaks out when he sees the penguin hanging from his ceiling fan. Thinking someone else must be behind this, Nick leaves and heads for his dining room, freaking out. As he does this, the laundry closet opens to reveal DPR, and Nick realizes he must be behind this. Nick stabs DPR, apparently killing him, but finds that DPR was just another pawn of JS.

Last time on The Vlog: DPR found out information on JS and his "plans," but he's been able to thwart them, either by things like magic counter spells or--in one instance--just counseling Bill (who feels he 'owes' him now). But DPR is attacked by the penguin after hearing some information about Plans 6, 7, and 8.

This was a complicated one to film. I had to check a lot of continuity bits throughout, making sure that even my toothpaste was in the right position. If the Season 1 finale is SAW, I suppose that makes this that one part of SAW 3. I splice in footage from that finale in with this episode, adding some new parts from DPR's perspective (which is why I think it might be more fun if the finale is fresh in your mind). It was a lot of fun putting together, despite the difficulty in getting it just right. It's slightly longer than usual, but not by too much.

Anywho... enjoy!

1.22.2011

The Demented Podcast #7 - Dark Ramblings.

For the seventh episode, it's all about classics with Mad Hatter of Dark of the Matinee. But first, we start off with some feedback and The Challenge.

The main discussion consists of the mentality behind watching classic films today, as well as (and mostly involving) my 60/60 Project (see the left side bar for reference). Hatter interviews me about anything and everything involving the project, as well as some thoughts on watching classics in general.

But then it's time for some classic revenge. Hatter takes his turn at The Tower, even going so far as to make a prediction that he will push Jess down to 4th place. But does his prediction ring true? Let's just say... he does pull off a 'first' during his climb. Listen to find out all the details!

Also, I apologize for Hatter's audio changing every now and then (it's mostly consistent, but alters here and there). Skype wasn't being friendly with me during the recording. (And there's a slight Easter Egg at the end.)

Current Leaderboard (The Demented Tower):
1) Rachel - 179 Points
2) James - 135 Points
3) Jess - 95 Points
4) Tom - 92.5 Points
5) Jason - 33 Points
6) Travis - 32.5 Points

You can listen to this episode on the player below or by subscribing through iTunes.

That being said, enjoy! Thanks goes out to Kevin MacLeod's Incompetech website for great, royalty-free music. And thanks to Google for helping me find a website that will give me free video game audio samples.

1.16.2011

Random Ramblings of a Demented DoorVlog S2.7.

Here's episode S2.7.

This particular episode references basically the entirety of Season 1. It also refers to the week-long break in between episodes 7 and 8. This is what you need to know...

Previously, in Season 1 of The Vlog: Nick has faced many obstacles: the loss of his voice in a silent movie skit, being stuck in a never-ending time loop, having to face a lava-covered floor while speaking in a Japanese-style dubbing, dealing with Bill becoming depressed over breaking up with Sookie, and taking a week-long break off from The Vlog. And when he returned, he started being attacked by a stuffed penguin that led up to a big showdown...

Last time on The Vlog: Throughout the season, DPR has been taking care of strange occurrences, even getting a little help here and there. Forced into an unpaid break, however, DPR contacts a super-hacker to look into someone named JS--a set of initials that had been written on his hand when he woke up in the apartment at the beginning of the season.

For the first time on The Vlog, I'm hardly in it! This episode is actually largely consisting of not one, but TWO guest characters. The episode is slightly longer than usual, but it goes by really fast. Both guests gave me multiple takes of everything, so I got to have a lot of fun mixing and matching in editing, which was excellent (so even they don't know exactly how it's gonna go). Not to mention they only got their halves of the script, so they have no idea what the other is gonna do. And I might say, it turned out fantastic. Coincidentally, if you place the DPR segments of this season in the timeline of the first season, this one falls directly in the spot where I took a week break, so it makes a strange kind of sense that I'm not in this episode much, and when I am, it's just as DPR (it's almost like "Nick" is taking yet another break).

Special thanks to my guests and their wonderful improv skills, even adding bits of their own here and there.

Anywho... I'll stop talking now, so... enjoy!

Random Ramblings of a Demented DoorVlog S2.6.

Here's episode S2.6.

This episode actually does not reference anything from Season 1 except for the fact that DPR is not in any of the latter episodes prior to the finale.

Last time on The Vlog: DPR is on an unpaid, extended vacation after Nick blames him for all the crazy stuff happening. That's pretty much all you need to know.

This is probably the only episode this season that doesn't blatantly reference Season 1. But don't take that to mean there's no plot continuance. Actually, this episode introduces us to my next guest character! It also introduces a new character of my own. It's strange--last week I thought I was gonna have too much footage and would have to scale back, but I ended up being short. This week I didn't think I was gonna have enough and I ended up almost at limit. Strange how that happens. Anyway, this is the episode that really kick-starts the plot... or at least turns on the engine. Starting next week, things will slowly start being revealed up through the finale.

Anywho, enjoy!
